Rabbi Philip Weintraub Congregation B’nai Israel November 20, 2020 Pirkei Avot 1:6 יְהוֹשֻׁעַ בֶּן פְּרַחְיָה וְנִתַּאי הָאַרְבֵּלִי קִבְּלוּ מֵהֶם. יְהוֹשֻׁעַ בֶּן פְּרַחְיָה אוֹמֵר, עֲשֵׂה לְךָ רַב, וּקְנֵה לְךָ חָבֵר, וֶהֱוֵי דָן אֶת כָּל הָאָדָם לְכַף זְכוּת Joshua ben Perahiah and Nittai the Arbelite received [the oral tradition] from them. A thread of blue

Rabbi Philip Weintraub Congregation B’nai Israel Parshat Shlach Lecha Shlach Lecha, this week’s parsha, is known for the spies, those individuals who scout out the land of Israel, see the incredible produce and tremble in fear at the “giants” of the land. The perspective of those 12 individuals had repercussions for our peoplehood. It was their vision and their choices that led to forty years in the wilderness. The end of the parsha is ALSO about vision and also about how our choices make all the difference. Twice daily, we conclude the Shema with these verses: לח דַּבֵּר אֶל-בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל, וְאָמַרְתָּ אֲלֵהֶם, וְעָשׂוּ לָהֶם צִיצִת עַל-כַּנְפֵי בִגְדֵיהֶם, לְדֹרֹתָם; וְנָתְנוּ עַל-צִיצִת הַכָּנָף, פְּתִיל תְּכֵלֶת. 38 Speak to the Israelite people and instruct them to make for themselves fringes on the corners of their garments throughout the ages; let them attach a cord of blue to the fringe at each corner. לט וְהָיָה לָכֶם, לְצִיצִת, וּרְאִיתֶם אֹתוֹ וּזְכַרְתֶּם אֶת-כּ

Pride Kabbalat Shabbat

Rabbi Philip Weintraub Congregation B’nai Israel PRIDE SHABBAT June 4, 2021 It is an honor to stand with you tonight. At Congregation B’nai Israel of St Petersburg, we stand side by side with our entire community. This is my third Pride Shabbat with CBI. The first was absolutely amazing, the second Covid limited and now it is a joy and mechayeh to be here with you! This feels like we are coming back to life. I want to share a teaching from Pirkei Avot which seems particularly relevant to us in this moment. Pirkei Avot 2:16 רַבִּי אֱלִיעֶזֶר אוֹמֵר, יְהִי כְבוֹד חֲבֵרְךָ חָבִיב עָלֶיךָ כְּשֶׁלָּךְ, וְאַל תְּהִי נוֹחַ לִכְעֹס. וְשׁוּב יוֹם אֶחָד לִפְנֵי מִיתָתְךָ. Rabbi Eliezer said: Let the honor of your friend be as dear to you as your own; And be not easily provoked to anger; And repent one day before your death.
